2 Simple DIY Facial Masks To Help Beat Hyperpigmentation

i love her hair. [source]

Hyperpigmentation occurs when patches of skin become darker than the areas around it. This happens due to an excessive production of melanin, and is usually your skin's way of trying to protect itself from damaging ultraviolet rays. Often, when your skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays for extended periods of time, your melanocyte cells [cells which produce melanin] go into overdrive producing melanin to absorb the rays from the sun. This excessive amount of production is what causes hyperpigmentation; those dark spots or freckles you may find on your face, arms and hands.

Before you spend several hundred dollars on microdermabrasion, bleaching creams, and chemical peels, try a simple yet effective facial mask [mask can be used on your body as well] that can help treat dark spots left behind due to hyperpigmentation.

Lemon & Raw Honey Facial
4 Tablespoons of fresh Lemon Juice
4 Tablespoons of fresh raw honey

Mix ingredients together in a small bowl. Apply to hyperpigmented areas. Cover with a warm towel for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse.

About This Formulation:
Lemon Juice: The lemon juice in this formulation acts as a skin whitener and gentle exfoliant due to the amount of natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids found naturally in some fruits. An exfoliant is needed to remove damaged surface skin cells.

Raw Honey: Hydrates and softens the skin. Raw honey also helps protect from bacteria, thus reducing your bouts with acne as well.
----------------------------------------------

Yogurt & Green Papaya Mask
3 Tablespoons of fresh squeezed Lemon Juice
1 Tablespoon of Organic Yogurt
3 Tablespoons of crushed Green Papaya

Mix ingredients together in a small bowl. Apply to hyperpigmented areas. Cover with a warm towel for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse.

About This Formulation:
Lemon Juice: The lemon juice in this formulation acts as a skin whitener and gentle exfoliant due to the amount of natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids found naturally in some fruits. An exfoliant is needed to remove damaged surface skin cells.

Organic Yogurt: The lactic acid found in yogurt also acts as a skin whitener and gentle exfoliant. Think of this ingredient as a low-grade chemical peel without all the nasty side-effects.
Papaya: The enzymes found in Papaya gently exfoliates damaged/dull surface skin cells, tones the skin, and removes toxins.

Tips for those experiencing bouts of Hyperpigmentation:
Minimize your use of essential oils that cause photosensitivity. Photo-sensitivity means that you will be more receptive to light and ultraviolet rays, which will increase your risk of sunburn. Here's a list of photo sensitive essential oils:
Ginger
Lemon
Lime
Lemon Verbena
Lovage
Angelica Root
Cumin
Cassia
Melissa

Avoid using products on your face, arms, hands [and any other areas that are exposed to sun for long periods of time] that contain alcohol or mercury, as these are also photo-sensitivity causing agents as well.

For those with chronic hyperpigmentation, use a sunscreen with an SPF of 50, while treating the affected areas. This can speed recovery and will also help prevent the same areas from darkening again, as a single day of unprotected sun exposure can undo months of treatment.

Skin Care Quick Tip: 5 Reasons To Eat These Five Healthy Foods

What you put in your body can actually be more significant than what you apply topically. It is for this reason that I am trying to be more careful of what I eat. My snack-time selections runs the gamut from chips, to candy, sometimes shakes, and other things I'm not proud of; but as of late I have made some healthy substitutions.

Try substituting some of these healthy snacks throughout the day and see the difference it makes in your skin!

Berries [Strawberries, Blackberries, Cranberries]: Berries are chock full of antioxidants! Antioxidants helps to protect your skin from harmful free radicals, gives your complexion a radiant glow, and fights the molecules that damage skin cells which leads to premature signs of aging . Berries also help the body produce collagen which keeps skin, soft, youthful and supple.

Nuts [Walnuts, Brazil Nuts]: Walnuts & Brazil nuts are high in Fatty Acids, so they help lend a supple, smooth appearance to your skin. Brazil Nuts are high in Selenium which helps fight free radicals and also improves the elasticity of the skin.

Oily Fish [Prawns, Tuna, Salmon, Sardines]: The Fatty Acids present helps to prevent dryness, clogged pores, and improves skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis due to healthier cell membranes. Fatty acids regulate the health of the cell by keeping toxins out, and allowing nutrients in. Healthier cell membranes means that your cells are able to retain more moisture, and more moisture means younger looking skin.

Citrus Fruits [Oranges, Lemons, Grapefruits]: Citrus fruits contains high levels of Vitamin C [otherwise known as Ascorbic Acid] that is instrumental in keeping your skin health and youthful. Vitamin C [often found in most anti aging serums and treatments] is a water soluble vitamin which means it cannot be stored by the body. This is why it's important to consume at least a few servings of Vitamin C daily. The Vitamin C found in Citrus fruits acts a powerful antioxidant that aggressively fights free radicals while keeping your skin smooth and firm.

Dark Green Vegetables [Spinach, Kale, Broccoli, Watercress]: Like many of the foods mentioned before this food group, dark green veggies are high in antioxidants. The Vitamin A present in green veggies also helps regulate the production of sebum, which is good news to those with oily, acne prone skin. Vitamin A strengthens the cell membrane and also regulates the release of toxins from the cells.

High-Tailing It: Everything You Need To Know About The Phony Pony

Wearing a phony pony is a great way to give yourself a break from the hassles of styling, while still maintaining a nice, sleek look! They are economical [Human hair ranges from $15-$25, Synthetic pieces run from $10-$15], easy to install, and comes in a variety of colors, textures, and styles.

Benefits of wearing a phony pony:

Protects the ends of your hair: Phony ponies can protect the most delicate portion of your hair; the ends. By covering the ends, you run less of a risk of splits, breakage, as well as exposure to harsh weather and/or UV rays.

Helps cut down on excess manipulation and mechanical damage:
Wearing a phony pony means that you don't have to worry about excessive styling, combing, detangling, which equals more length retention for you [provided other aspects of your regimen are healthy].

Makes a sleek go-to style for nights on the town: Instead of fussing over your hair for your next outing, sweep it back into a chic ponytail, and slap on a phony pony! This is perfect for those that have yet to perfect other natural styles, but still want to avoid using heat and even those that are in a time crunch!

Don't like the variety of phony ponies in your local Beauty Supply?
Check out your local wig shop or an online source like Hair Sister's , Especially Yours and Claire Hair.

Tips:
  • Do not wear your phony pony in the same spot for longer than one week, as it can cause thinning in that area.
  • Think the phony ponies have too much hair? Try a children's phony pony instead.
  • To lessen the amount of tension placed on your follicles, take down the ponytail at night.
  • At night, gather the hair into a loose ponytail and tie down with a satin scarf to keep your hair laying smooth. This should prevent you from having to brush your hair everyday.
  • Freshen up the style in the morning by tightening up the ponytail, spritzing your hair with water [this will reactivate any gel you may have added from the day prior], and adding a little pomade to tame flyaway's. Make sure to tie your hair with a satin scarf for at least 20-30 minutes to lay your hair down nice and smooth until the top portion dries.
  • Ease styling worries by choosing ponytails that are highly textured, in doing so, it will be less pressure to get your real hair super straight.
  • For more of a natural looking pony, try to find hair pieces that are layered
  • To detangle synthetic & human hair pieces, lightly spritz them with a homemade Apple Cider Vinegar + water mixture [1 cup of water + 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar].
  • Make sure to practice these healthy bunning & ponytail guidelines, as they will help keep your hair healthy, thick and free of breakage.
Check out some of these products to help you nail this style!

Ouchless Rubber-bands: These rubber-bands are free metal, thick, and offers a firm hold

Eco Styler Gel: One of my favorite alcohol-free gels. Alcohol-free means you won't experience the harsh drying effects like you would with gels formulated with alcohol.

Fantasia IC Hair Polisher: Another stellar alcohol-free gel! This gel is formulated with Olive Oil for additional moisture and delivers long-lasting hold!

Bobby Pins: To hide shorter pieces, reach for good quality bobby pins with thick rubber tips. Goody & Vidal Sassoon are my favorites.

Garnier Wax: If you're wearing your hair pressed or straightened, try this wax by Garnier! It imparts mega-shine, tames flyaways, and offers all-day hold!
Tip: I especially like using this product around my hairline and nape area, it keeps the hair uber shiny, smooth, and tamed.

Mixology Quicktip: Make Your Own Anti-Aging Serum

Nia looks absolutely wonderful in these photos. However I was floored when I found out she was knocking on 40's door. Granted her budget may allow for more pampering and R&R, but don't count out youthful just yet. - You can make spa quality treatments at home minus the preservatives, pretentiousness, and high price tag with just a few ingredients.

Here is a simple anti-aging serum formulation that will tone, tighten and bring that youthful glow back to your skin!

You Will Need:
A scant pinch of Hyaluronic Acid [in powder form]
A scant pinch of L-Ascorbic Acid [in crystal form]
1/4 cup of Aloe Vera Gel

To Make:
Add Aloe to small bowl and drop in Hyaluronic Acid & L-Ascorbic Acid. Mix well until H.A & L.A is well blended.

Transfer mixture to clean container with a secure lid and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
To Use:
Apply a small amount of this facial serum on your face and neck nightly. Allow your skin to soak up the properties of the serum for up to 15 minutes before applying a moisturizer.

Where to purchase ingredients?
All ingredients can be purchased at The Herbarie or via your favorite raw ingredients vendor.

About This Formulation:
  • Hyaluronic Acid is found in healthy, supple skin. As we get older our levels of HA tends to drop. Adding Hyaluronic Acid to this formulation will increase the skin's ability to retain moisture, and will also keep skin soft, smooth and supple.
  • L-Ascorbic Acid also known as Vitamin C is one of natures best natural anti-oxidants. The L-Ascorbic Acid in this formulation will help soothe and protect your skin.
  • Aloe Vera Gel is filled with regenerative properties that help soothe and protect the skin [AVG is filled with anti-oxidant and anti-viral properties]. Aloe Vera Gel is also chock-full of skin loving nutrients and enzymes that will impart a radiant glow and fade blemishes if used regularly.

Reader Question: HELP! How Do I Find Out My Skin Type?

"I read your post yesterday about not using Olive Oil on skin that has acne flareups and I think this is me. I used Olive Oil and I broke out all over my face and I'm afraid I don't know what my skin-type is. Please help! thx"
This is a very common issue for those that oil cleanse. I want to stress this to everyone reading this post, it is imperative that you choose the right oil for your skin type. Using an oil that is too heavy for your skin could lead to additional breakouts as well as blackheads. While using an oil that is too light can have the same results as well. This is one of the most common mistakes people make when attempting the oil cleansing method.

In this post, we will cover the different skin types as well as the oils that are best suited for your type. Please note that the recommended oils listed are for your secondary oils only. The main oil should be Castor Oil as this acts as your cleansing oil.If you have any additional questions, please leave them in the comments so that I can address them. Read on for the deets:

How do I know if I have oily skin?
  • Your skin is blemish prone [acne - whiteheads - blackheads]
  • Your skin is shiny due to excessive oil production
  • You have enlarged pores on your cheeks and chin area
How do I know If I have Normal skin?
  • You experience little to no breakouts
  • Your face is hydrated and smooth
  • Your pores are not visible
  • You have an even, bright complexion
How do I know if I have sensitive skin?
  • You experience burning or peeling with lots of products
  • Your skin is very thin or delicate
  • Your skin is prone to allergic reactions
  • Your cheeks "flush" easily
How do I know if I have dry skin?
  • Your skin appears ashy or dull [especially in women of color]
  • You have wrinkles around the eye or mouth area
  • Your pores are barely visible
  • Your cheeks are flaky at times
  • Your skin feels tight
How do I know if I have combination skin?
  • You have large pores on your cheeks or chin
  • You have acne on your cheeks, nose, forehead and chin [known as your T-zone]
  • Your T-zone produces more oil than the rest of your face
  • Your cheeks are drier than the rest of your skin
Now that you've picked your skin-type, it's time to choose the proper oils for your skin-type:

Combination Skin:
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Hazelnut Oil

Two DIY Natural Sugar Scrubs That Will Tone, Even & Tighten Your Skin

Whenever I am going out and plan to show a little skin, I beef my exfoliating regimen up to 4x's weekly.

Sugar scrubs are my secret to clear, glowing, even skin. I use my homemade sugar scrub to exfoliate my skin while in the shower about 3 times a week. Exfoliating your skin regularly helps gently remove dead skin cells which lends to an even appearance and skin that "glows". Exfoliating is also beneficial for clearing body acne, moisturizing the skin, tighting the pores and helping prevent future breakouts. You can create spa quality body scrubs at home for a fraction of the cost with some of the same great ingredients.
When applying the mixture, make sure to concentrate on areas like your elbows, knees, and feet to slough off dead skin cells.
I like using sugar in my scrubs versus salt because sugar is chock-full of glycolic acid [a form of alpha hydroxy acid] which helps to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, hydrate the skin, protect the skin from toxins, and gently exfoliate superficial skin cells. - I recommend using Brown Sugar in lieu of regular sugar, as it is a lot more gentle on the skin.

Eczema Sugar Scrub
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1 Tsp Raw Honey
2 Tsp Aloe Vera Gel
6 Tbsp Avocado Oil
10 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • Aloe Vera: Soothes discomfort associated with inflamed skin, strengthens skin tissues. The sugars in Aloe also helps to condition, improve skin's elasticity and hydrate the skin. The gum resins in Aloe Vera also delivers antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties to the skin, helping to effectively and naturally treat eczema.
  • Raw Honey: Heals and moisturizes dry patches of skin and inflamed areas. Raw honey has strong antibacterial properties that can act as a protective barrier on broken skin [broken skin usually occurs during scratching]. Raw honey is also purported to stimulate skin regeneration.
  • Avocado Oil: Very rich in vitamins, this oil hydrates dry skin, improves the elasticity of the skin and helps treat eczema and other issues pertaining to inflammation of the skin.
  • Lavender Essential Oil: Lavender essential oil has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties making it an effective essential oil for treating eczema.

Alpha Hydroxy Cane Sugar Scrub
1/2 Cup Cane Sugar <-- Cane sugar has more glycolic acid vs regular brown sugar
1 Tsp Raw Honey
3 Tbsp Jojoba Oil
3 Tbsp Grapeseed Oil
  • Raw Honey: Hydrates skin, acts as a barrier against toxins, evens skin tone and improves the elasticity of your skin. Raw honey also enhances collagen production which makes for tighter skin.
  • Jojoba Oil: Jojoba Oil nourishes and hydrates the skin. Jojoba is also very similar to the structure of the skin's sebum therefore it penetrates the skin quickly.
  • Grapeseed Oil: This oil is slightly astringent so it has some toning and tightening properties. Grapeseed oil also fades dark blemishes and evens skin tone.

Sound Off! Why On Earth Would I Put Oil On My Oily Skin?

Love this pic! [source]

As I mentioned in my post Tue, some people may cringe at the thought of adding oil to a face that is already prone to acne. This is a logical and justifiable concern! Yesterday, I received a few questions in the comment section of my skincare post; and I thought it would be better served if I answered them in the form of a blog post for others that may have some of the same concerns.

In addition, if you have any questions/concerns on this post, or the oil cleansing method in general; please feel free to leave them in the comment section so that we can create somewhat of a resource for others who are looking for answers as well!

Your Questions:
"Is there even any conclusive, empirical, scientific, quantifiable, peer-reviewed EVIDENCE of the effectiveness of this so called method?"

"Furthermore what are the mechanisms that render it effective? HOW DOES WASHING ONE'S ALREADY SEBUM FILLED FACE WITH OIL IMPROVE ONE'S FACIAL CONDITION!?"

"I understand the spirit with which Chidi asked the question. So, MTM: Is there evidence, other than anecdotal, regarding the effectiveness of oils to cleanse skin, esp. those of us with problem skin?"
My Response:

Oil will not exasperate your issues with acne if you are breakout prone. Sebum is a non-polar molecule which means it is unable to dissolve in polar molecules like water. This is why most facial cleansers, laundry detergent, soaps, and shampoo's are formulated with harsh surfactants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate. This is a cheap, synthetic, man-made ingredient used to remove excess oils, dirt and sebum.

When you clean your face with products that contain harsh surfactants, it strips your skin leaving it dry. As a result, your glands go into overproduction mode to make up for the lack of moisture. What you are left with is an endless cycle of dryness coupled with an overproduction of sebum.

The general rule of thumb in chemistry is that "like dissolves like". Non-polar molecules are able to dissolve in non-polar solvents. Relating this to skincare, the oil in your cleansing mixture is able to dissolve excess oil and fatty deposits that are present in the pores and hair follicles of your skin. Scientifically this is possible because sebum [in this case the solute] and the oils mentioned in the post [we'll call these the solvents] are structurally compatible.

Excess sebum is due in part to the lack of Linoleic Acid present in the hair follicles, as Linoleic Acid reduces the output of sebum. Studies show that Linoleic Acid [a fatty acid found in many of the vegetable oils referenced in the post] reduces clogged pores [microcomodones] significantly when used topically [on the skin].

I don't want to veer off into the structure of oils, so I will keep it brief and note a few key pieces of information that may be of use; Jojoba, Hazelnut, Grapeseed, Evening Primrose, Avocado, Kukui and Borage Oil [all the oils mentioned in Tuesday's post] are high in Linoleic Acid. This means that these oils are effective in regulating excess sebum, and preventing clogged pores. These oils are all high in anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties which lends to their ability to deliver enzymes that dissolves the blockage in your pores.

There are many well known, high-end brands out there that consciously formulate products with the health of your skin in mind [albeit they are very expensive]. Take Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil which is formulated with Jojoba & Avocado Oil, or DHC Cleansing Oil formulated with Olive Oil. If you would like to see peer-reviewed evidence of the benefits of cleansing with oil. Check out the reviews on both products [Shu Uemura Review + DHC Cleansing Oil Review]. You can even do a search on the right-hand section of the blog to gain real-time insight [via on-going comments] from MTM readers who started the OCM method, or Acne.Org which has a plethora of reviews on the Oil Cleansing Method.

* Let me point out that the only difference between commercial based cleansing oils and oils that you can formulate in your kitchen, is that commercial based cleansing oils are formulated with emulsifiers that bind water and oil together. This means that when water is introduced to your mixture [lets say as you are washing the product off] a stable emulsion occurs. The emulsifying ingredient does not lend any therapeutic properties to the skin, or prevent skin inflammation. In the case of cleansing oils, it eases the wash-off process. - You can spend an upwards of $25 [8oz] for a product like this, or you can make it yourself for less than a fraction of the cost with the same ingredients [minus the emulsifier].

Over the past 15 years I have collected many commercial books and reports on formulating personal care products [lame I know], and attended courses on the structure of the compounds used to create them. Over the next few months, I will try to get permission from various authors to scan and reproduce these articles on the site in hopes that it arms you with clear cut information about what's in your skincare products and how it benefits [or harms] your skin. Whether you decide to oil cleanse or cleanse using traditional methods like soap and water, we should all know how our products work for us and if there is a natural alternative to what is being offered commercially.

Skin Care: Natural Spot Treatments >> Video

This video is an accompaniment to this skin care video I posted a while back. A lot of you asked if I did any kind of spot treatments for occasional flare ups and break outs, the answer is YES! How often I do them depends on the condition of my skin. Here are a few tried and true recipes that I have incorporated into my regimen. You can try one or all, and see how well they work for you.

Fullers Earth & Lemon Juice Treatment:
1 teaspoon Fuller's Earth Powder + enough lemon juice to make a thick paste. Mix well, apply to each blemish and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water, apply toner, and moisturizer as usual.

Honey + Cinnamon Spot Treatment:
2 Tablespoons of Honey + 1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon. Mix well, apply to each blemish, and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes. Remove with lukewarm water, and follow up with a cold water rinse. Apply toner, and moisturizer as usual.
* You may notice the cinnamon has a slight stinging sensation. This is normal unless redness or pain persists. To be on the safe side, test on the inside of your arm and note any adverse reactions.

Neem Powder & Lemon Treatment:
1 teaspoon Neem Powder + enough lemon juice to make a thick paste. Mix well, apply to each blemish and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water, apply toner, and moisturizer as usual.

Aloe & Tea Tree Treatment:
1 tbsp of Aloe Vera Gel/Liquid + 3 drops of Tea Tree Oil. Mix well, and apply to each blemish. Allow to dry on face. No rinsing required. Apply toner and moisturizer as usual.

About each ingredient:
  • Fullers Earth: Brightens dark spots, draws out excess oils and toxins
  • Lemon Juice: Due to the acidic nature of lemon juice, it is effective for helping to lighten dark spots caused by acne.
  • Neem: Antibacterial properties helps to alleviate issues with acne. Neem also has anti-inflammatory properties which makes it an ideal treatment for breakouts.
  • Aloe Vera: Decreases swelling and redness associated with breakouts, and also helps soothe and hydrate skin.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Is loaded with anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial agents which helps quickly reduce skin inflammations [aka breakouts]when used as a topical application.
  • Honey: Acts as a natural anti-bacterial, clearing breakouts and killing the bacteria that cause them
  • Cinnamon: Has strong antiseptic and astringent properties. Cinnamon is a wonderful natural alternative for spot treatments.
Where to find these ingredients:

Skin Care | My Skin Care Regimen >> Video

I have a lot of posts on skin care, and many of you have requested I do a video on my actual skin care regimen, so that you can get a better idea of what I do on a day-to-day basis. So here it is! For those of you that are unable to watch the video, here's an outline of what's covered.
A Brief History On My Skin:
I have very oily, sensitive, acne prone skin. The only commercial products that has successfully kept my skin clear and free of blemishes has been Dermalogica brand products [Check this post for more info]. I am no longer using Dermalogica, and have opted for more of a natural regimen which includes Oil Cleansing, Natural Spot Treatments, Facials, & Moisturizers.
  • Oil Cleansing Removes:
  • Dead Skin Cells
  • Excess Oils
  • Toxins
  • Makeup
My Morning & Night Routine:
  • Apply Oil Cleansing Mixture [60% Castor Oil, 20% Grapeseed Oil, 20% Hazelnut Oil] all over my face, and massage into my skin. This will gently exfoliate, and remove impurities, dead skin, excess oils etc.
  • Place a clean towel under a stream of hot, running water. Lightly wring towel, and drape it over entire face until cool. This opens your pores [and gives you a mini steam treatment] allowing the Castor Oil to draw the toxins out of your skin, while the secondary oils/essential oils permeates deep into the skin, lending it's moisturizing and therapeutic properties. Repeat 2-3 times. Then gently wipe skin of excess oil.
  • Rinse face with cool water to close the pores
  • Spritz a bit of my homemade Apple Cider Vinegar & Green Tea Toner on my face
  • Apply a dime-size amount of Grapeseed Oil as my moisturizer. I love this because it's a very light, yet moisturizing oil that also doubles as an astringent.
  • I do not apply sunscreen because Grapeseed Oil can act as a natural sunscreen [The SPF rating would be about a 4]. It works well for eliminating free radicals, and also has amazing antioxidant properties that promotes the repairing of cells.
Special Treatments:
Twice Weekly, I prepare an exfoliant using 1tablespoon of raw honey, and one tablespoon of brown sugar;
  • I apply the mixture to my freshly cleaned face, and massage gently for about 3-5 minutes
  • The exfoliant mixture helps to slough off dead skin cells, brighten dark marks, as well as even out the skin tone while imparting moisture
  • Rinse mixture with warm water to thoroughly remove all traces of honey and sugar
  • Follow up with a cool water rinse
  • Spritz a bit of my homemade Apple Cider Vinegar & Green Tea Toner on my face
  • Apply Grapeseed Oil as my moisturizer of choice
Once weekly, I prepare a special detox mask using Bentonite clay and sour cream. Bentonite Clay is wonderful for removing toxins and excess oils, and the sour cream makes a great addition to this mixture as the lactic acid in the sour cream helps fade blemishes, and act as a low grade chemical peel.
  • To prepare the mixture, add two tablespoons of Bentonite Clay to four tablespoons of sour cream, and mix well.
  • I apply the mixture to my freshly cleaned face, and massage gently for about 2-3 minutes
  • Allow the mixture to dry thoroughly, then wipe clean with a damp cloth
  • Follow up with a cool water rinse to close pores
  • Spritz a bit of my homemade Apple Cider Vinegar & Green Tea Toner on my face
  • Apply Grapeseed Oil as my moisturizer of choice
Supplements, and Dietary Regimen:
  • Every morning, I have a bowl of yogurt with 2 tablespoons each of Wheat Germ & Ground Flax Seeds. Flax Seeds contain a high amount of Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty Acids which are essential in the role of maintaining healthy skin/hair as well as preventing and/or clearing up skin disorders such as Psoriasis, Acne, and Eczema. Wheat Germ is also beneficial for clearing skin disorders, and is also rich in antioxidants.
  • I also take two tablespoons of Cod Liver Oil daily! One tablespoon in the morning after breakfast, and one tablespoon in the evening after dinner. The Cod Liver oil works wonders for clearing the skin, giving it a bright, and youthful glow.  The abundance of fatty acids found in Cod Liver Oil reduces inflammation, and also improves the structure of skin cells. The Vitamin A in Cod Liver Oil is the main component in helping correct and prevent future skin disorders. And finally, the Vitamin E oil acts as a natural antioxidant, and protects the skin from UV damage.
Where to get the ingredients mentioned in this post. For your convenience, I have hyperlinked online sources as well:

  • Castor Oil - Can be found in the first aid sections of most drug stores
  • Hazelnut Oil - Is located in the cooking isle of most health food stores [tip: if it isn't in the cooking isle, try the cosmetic isle]

Beauty & Skin Ethos | Skin Quick Tip: 5 Tips To Fade Dark Blemishes!

Alek Wek has the most beautiful skin I have ever seen! [source:]

Tired of spending money on skin care products chock full of hard-to-pronounce ingredients that do more harm than good? Here are a few quick, easy, and most importantly effective natural solutions to fade unsightly blemishes!

Fruit Scrub Formulated with Alpha & Beta Hydroxy Acids: Alpha & Beta Hydroxy Acids are extremely helpful in fading dark spots, as well as evening out skin complexion. Specialty products formulated with Alpha & Beta Hydroxy Acids usually start at $20 on up. Save your cash, and formulate your own products at home for a fraction of the cost; as these acids are easily found in Apples, Oranges, and Grapefruit at your local supermarket. - Take one apple, orange, lemon and puree in a blender. Mix in about 1/3 cup of fine raw cane sugar [the glycolic acid found in cane sugar helps minimize wrinkles, even skin pigmentation, and gently exfoliate skin], and apply the mask to your face. Gently massage mixture into skin, and allow the mask to sit for about 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water. [use 1-2 weekly]

Vitamin E Oil: Apply Vitamin E Oil to face nightly to help fade blemishes, and protect the skin from additional post inflammatory breakouts caused by acne. You can purchase vitamin E capsule's, puncture them, and use the oil from the capsule. [use twice daily]

Lemon Juice + Manuka Honey mixture: Lemon juice has long been praised for it's ability to lighten dark blemishes. - Apply lemon juice to affected area, allow to dry, then apply a small amount of Manuka honey over the area you applied the lemon. Manuka honey is naturally enriched with lactic acid which is very helpful in lightening skin blemishes. Manuka honey also has strong medicinal and antibacterial properties which makes it very effective in eliminating issues with acne, and maintaining an even skin complexion [use twice daily].

Tip: Manuka Honey can be found in most health food stores. I purchase mine from Vitamin Shoppe

Sour Milk Treatment: This treatment is similar to a low-grade chemical peel, as the lactic acid acts as a natural exfoliant, and skin brightener. Apply sour milk nightly to entire face, allow to dry, then rinse well with cool water.

Lemon Juice + Multani Mati Mix: Mix enough lemon juice with Multani Mati Powder to make a thick paste; then apply the mixture onto each spot, allow to dry thoroughly, and rinse with cool water. You can use this mixture on your elbows, knees, as well as your face! - Fuller's Earth powder is enriched with silica, iron oxide, lime, as well as magnesia and is a skin-clearing/brightening powerhouse. It gently removes dirt/toxins, draws out excess oils, and helps lighten dark spots caused by acne. [use twice daily]

Tip: If you can't find Multani Mati in your local Indian Grocery Store, try a health food store for Fuller's Earth powder [as they are one in the same].

Life Of A Mixtress: A Few Of My Favorite Beauty Formulations!

This is hands down my favorite lip exfoliant recipe, it leaves my lips extremely smooth, and hydrated. The Sweet Almond Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Peppermint Essential Oil and Vitamin E can all be found at your local health food store. And I purchase my Meadowfoam Oil here, Meadowfoam Oil is a superior oil used in a lot of high-end hair care and beauty formulations.

About This Formulation:
Sweet Almond Oil; acts as an emollient to keep your lips soft and smooth all day
Grapeseed Oil; hydrates, and delivers skin loving nutrients to your lips.
Meadowfoam Oil; is choked full of moisturizing essential fatty acids
Vitamin E Oil; smooths, softens and protects lips from harsh environmental elements [free radicals]
Sugar; acts as a natural [and sweet] humectant, drawing the moisturizing properties of the oils into your skin, sugar also gently exfoliates your skin, leaving your lips soft and smooth

YOU WILL NEED:
Sugar
1oz Sterile Container
2 tsp Sweet Almond Oil
2 tsp Grapeseed Oil
2 tsp Meadowfoam Oil
2 tsp Vitamin E Oil
3 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil

DIRECTIONS:
Mix all ingredients together until it forms a thick paste, transfer paste to container. Use nightly during your skin care regimen to gently exfoliate your lips. All you ladies who love your matte lipstick will love how this formulation keeps your lips soft and smooth hours after use.

Here are two simple yet highly effective recipe's that don't require a ton of different ingredients. All of the ingredients for these two cleansing oil recipes can be purchased at your local grocery store:

Anti Acne Cleansing Oil
4oz Grapeseed Oil
4oz Castor Oil

Cleansing Oil, Formulated For Those W/Dry Skin
4oz Castor Oil
4oz Olive Oil

This is one of my favorite facial masks because it's easy to make, and the ingredients can be found at most health food stores. Flax Seeds have anti-inflammatory properties that helps heal skin issues like Eczema, as well as acne. This Flax Seed facial mask also imparts nutrients in your skin that will help keep it smooth, and hydrated.

The Rosemary Essential Oil in this formula is also beneficial; as it is extremely effective in clearing, calming [the skin], and preventing break outs.

YOU WILL NEED:
1/2 Cup Flax Seeds
2 Cups Water
Rosemary Essential Oil

DIRECTIONS:
Bring water to a boil then remove from heat. Add flax seeds, and allow to steep for about 30 minutes, when the mixture becomes gelatinous, remove the seeds from the bowl. Allow to cool, then add 3 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil to your mask.

Apply mask to your face, and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes. Rinse face with cool water, and gently pat dry.

Calling All Mixtresses: Want to Ditch Your Store Bought Facial Cleanser?

For the past few months, I have been experimenting with more natural alternatives to incorporate in my skin-care regimen. As some of you may remember, I ditched my trusty store bought cleanser some time ago, and started relying solely upon the use of natural oils, plants, and extracts. - So far so good, my face has never looked better, and my pocket-book thanks me.

Gather your bottles, some oils, and read on for the deets!

A More Natural Alternative - The Oil Cleansing Method

Cleanse Using The OCM Method: Simply put, this method involves cleansing your skin with oils versus surfactants. Cleansing with oil is a gentle way to remove dirt, bacteria, and excess oils from your pores. Did you know that water does not dissolve oils [however, oil does]? This is why most facial cleansers on the market today are comprised of harsh surfactants. It is worth noting that products containing these surfactants can strip your face of it's natural sebum leaving your skin dry, and irritated.

Most oil cleansing formulas are 50% Castor Oil to 50% Extra Virgin Olive Oil, however you can pick the best ratio/oil type for your skin. Castor Oil is used as a base in most OCM formulations because it helps to draw out toxins, slough dead skin cells, excess sebum, and dirt from your pores, while the secondary oil acts more or less as a moisturizer, and carrier oil to deliver therapeutic properties deep into the skin. - I have very oily acne-prone skin so I use Hazelnut Oil in place of the Extra Virgin Olive Oil because it is much lighter than Olive Oil, and acts as a natural astringent/moisturizer. Hazelnut Oil is also purported to tighten and tone your skin, which is also a major plus.

My formula consists of: 60% Castor Oil, 20% Grapeseed Oil, 20% Hazelnut Oil [I also add several drops of Lavender, and Tea Tree Essential Oil]

Oils For Certain Skin Types
Oily, Acne Prone Skin: Grapeseed Oil, Hazelnut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Flax Seed, Neem Oil
Dry, Mature Skin: Evening Primrose Oil, Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil
Sensitive Skin: Meadowfoam Oil, Apricot Kernel, Rosehip Oil

Extra Additives [Essential Oils]
Acne Prone Skin: Tea Tree Oil, Bergamot Oil, Clove Oil, Lavender Oil, Rosewood Oil
Dry Skin: Cedarwood, Rose, Myrrh, Chamomile, Patchouli
Oily Skin: Lemongrass, Clary Sage, Frankincense,

How To Do The Oil Cleansing Method
1. Gently massage oil mixture into your face
2. Place a clean towel under a stream of hot, running water. Lightly wring towel, and drape it over entire face for about 1-2 minutes. This opens your pores [and gives you a mini steam treatment] allowing the Castor Oil to draw the toxins out of your skin, while the secondary oil/essential oils permeates deep into the skin, lending it's moisturizing and therapeutic properties.
3. Remove towel, rinse thoroughly, and begin to wipe excess oil from face
4. After removing oil cleansing mixture, rinse face with cold water to close pores!
Cleanse face using OCM in the morning, and repeat at bedtime.

Tone Skin
Here are two of my favorite toner recipe's:
ACV + Green Tea Toner
2oz Apple Cider Vinegar
2oz Distilled Water
3 Green Tea, teabags [high in antioxidants]
5 drops Tea Tree Oil [anti-fungal/microbal properties]
10 drops Jojoba Oil [a wonderful moisturizer that closely resembles the sebum in your skin's structure]

Boil water, add tea bags, and allow to steep for 20 minutes. Allow tea mixture to cool, and pour into a spray bottle. Add ACV, Tea tree Oil, Jojoba Oil, and mix well.

Tea Tree Toner
2oz Witch Hazel
5 drops of Tea Tree Oil
10 drops of Jojoba Oil

Mix all ingredients well, and pour in a spray bottle.

Moisturize Skin
I use about a dime-size amount of Grapeseed Oil to moisturize my skin; you can use any of the oils mentioned above that are best suited for your skin-type.

Skincare Quick Tip: Get Clear Skin Now!!!

Here lately I have been experimenting with different skin care regimens to try to find more natural, effective alternatives. Coincidentally, my mom called me raving about how well her skin was doing, and it was all due to her consumption of Flax Seeds & Wheat Germ.

So for the past week I have resorted to using solely the "oil cleansing method", and I incorporated two new ingredients my mother now swears on; Flax Seed & Wheat Germ. Every morning I have about a cup of yogurt, and in it I add two tablespoons each of ground Flax Seed, and Wheat Germ. Have I noticed a difference? Most definitely. Will I go back to Dermalogica? Not if I continue to see results.

About 2 tablespoons of Wheat Germ contains 20 % of your daily allowance of Folic Acid & Vitamin E [Vitamin E helps to protect your skin cells against UV radiation from the sun, and also protects cell membranes], and two tablespoons of Flax Seeds is the equivalent of eating about 25-30 cups of Broccoli. Flax Seeds contain a high amount of Omega 3 & Omega 6 Fatty Acids which are essential in the role of maintaining healthy skin/hair as well as preventing and/or clearing up skin disorders such as Acne, Psoriasis, and Eczema. Flax Seeds also help keep your pores open, thus preventing the build-up of sebum, that nasty little culprit behind Acne. Fatty acids also help your skin to remain soft, supple, and smooth, and it also regulates what goes in and out of your skin cells. In other words, they allow nutrients and water in, and keep toxins out.

I can barely taste the Wheat Germ, however the Flax Seeds have some sort of a nutty flavor to them. So if nutty isn't your thing, you may want to mix them in with something that disguises the taste a little more. I like using yogurt because it contains probiotics that benefit your complexion, which leaves your skin smoother, less prone to breakouts, and also helps your body maintain it's natural healthy balance of hormones.

Try This: [Low Fat Wheat Germ/Flax Seed Yogurt]
1 cup of low-fat yogurt
2 tablespoons of wheat germ
2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
2 tablespoons granola
1 tablespoon dried cranberries

If you aren't too keen on eating the Flax Seeds, try this: [Flax Seed Gel Facial]
Grind 1/4 tablespoon of Flax Seeds, and mix with rose water [enough water to make a thick paste], let the mixture sit until the mucilage releases, and you are left with something of a gel-like consistency. Apply on your face paying close attention to the problem areas [be sure to avoid your eyes], leave on for about 10-15 minutes, then rise!
